GET OVER YOURSELF!

by *Robaato

Oh, before I begin:

If anyone know any fantastic 3D Zbrush (and Maya, though the originality in Maya is hard to find these days; everyone’s building off of stock models) modelers, please let me know. I’m looking to hire a peep for some Rat Rage prototypes for figures in the near future. They have to be good with catching the original art exceedingly well, as well as astounding anatomy work. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Also, I’m working my new gig + Rat Rage + miscellaneous. Haven’t sent ALL of the commissions out yet, but they are definitely on their way. Had to begin the new gig earlier than I thought.

So,

GET OVER YOURSELF!

Sometimes it’s good to give yourself a pat on the back for your accomplishments. When you get done with a piece that you poured blood, sweat, tears, saliva, and urine, you feel like you can throw the whole planet of Earth into a different galaxy. Those are very natural feelings. You have a right to be proud of yourself for what you’ve done.

But pride is another thing that you have to be EXTREMELY careful of.  Last week, I was talking about envy, and how it can have detrimental effects against your artistic well-being (By the way this is going, probably going to have a seven deadly sins thing going on… Hahaha. CLEARLY wasn’t what I was going for from the outset).

It’s good to feel proud for one’s achievements. It’s like you’re basically saying “Yeah, I did this! I. RULE.” It’s when those feelings stack up over time that it becomes dangerous.

Everyday as of late, I’ve been personally telling myself “GET OVER YOURSELF! You’re not as great as you think you are.”

As a human being, it’s innate for me, by default, to feel like I’m the main character to my story and that I am “saving the world”, figuratively speaking. Though we’re all our own main characters to our own life story, we are by no means shaping the world or any part of the world that we may think we are.

I know a few (really good) artists, who’s ego and pride has effin’ turned them Sith. They can’t take a critique well, they blow up if someone points out their own personal opinion on a particular way a character’s been drawn, etc. Why? Over time, they get bloated with so much praise and congratulations, that they somewhat feel they’re now a “God”. Then at that point, they’re basically thinking: “I’m a GOD. You know what that means? You can’t touch me! You have no say in any matter involving my art”.

It’s a sad way to go down.

Few of them go to the point of bashing their own fans, as the fans continue to praise amidst the bashing.

This is why I tell myself every so often “GET OVER YOURSELF! You’re not as great as you think you are” when those proud feelings of accomplishments leak in, because I would hate to visit myself in the future and find out how much of a douche I would turn out if not doing so. It’s good to know when you’re good enough to get by, and leave it at that. It’s bad to know that you’re good enough to try and trample others.

I guess I have to express this because I feel and know that I’m getting popular by the minute. I’m averaging 3000 messages and comments a week now, and growing. I want this journal to be here as a reminder for me to keep my cool, and NEVER forget where I came from, no matter where I end up.

It’s my own little way to assure that I stay humble and to always serve others first before serving myself. Do you have your own little way?
