Only 24 hours left!In case you missed it, there was an update regarding add-on pledges which might be of interest to you if you want to select specific incentive prizes, on top of a lower pledge amount. For example, if you want the artbook, you can add $57 on top of your pledge. Further details are in the link! Thanks everyone for your support, look at how many pledges this project got! @_@

30 Hours Left… Then GAME TIME.

Man, things are getting back like the first day we launched the Kickstarter… Well, I’m personally blown away at the response. The team is blown away at the response. THANKS A MILLION.

For everyone that has contributed even a dollar, you guys have done so much for us and gave us the push to make Cryamore a reality. By this time next year, there’s gonna be a fresh new series about to launch.

I want to also personally, again, thank Alan, Aivi, Surasshu, Ryan, Brandon, Koki, Kinuko, Jordan, Chris, Camila, Erica, Marianne, Kimlinh, Judy, JC, and EVERYONE who have shown their support thus far by sharing the game, making art, telling us wonderful feedback on the game so far, and just being overall awesome people. It’s rare to see this kind of feedback these days, so for that, I can’t thank you enough it seems.

Well, if you want to check the game’s pitch out in its finest hour, and are curious enough to support it, here’s the link one last time from my lil’ blog here.

Again, THANK YOU. Now we have a game to make.

Updated Ghilcrest - AI Testing & Smooth Wall Collision - Podcast Interview

cryamore:

Welcome all new followers! Here’s today’s Kickstarter update!

Refined Ghilcrest

We have drastically changed Ghilcrest’s layout for the game. Though we were huge fans of the scale of the first one, we decided to scrap it as it’s a bit confusing when running through it, and very resource heavy:

image

The old one measured approximately 72 screens!!! (1280x720) The main reason we initially laid it out this way was because of the lack of camera control and that originally houses all had to have their entrances facing the player. So we originally spread each building around to stay meet that factor. Though, looking back, we may have spaced things a bit too much.

While Esmy will rarely be blocked by a building, there’s way too many screens and too many empty spaces. The amount of environments to draw and color is pretty huge and while a big town is always nice, it’s only worth it if every bit of space is utilized properly. We believe this applies to any environment really (clearly evident in MMORPGs and sandbox games).

So we did more studying. We looked deeper into a few games in the Playstation era (Saga Frontier, Legend of Mana) as they were within a similar vein as Cryamore; RPGs with hand-drawn environments not following a tile-based setup. We figured that having a tighter layout wouldn’t really hurt and it’s not too bad having certain buildings obscure Esmy at times.

image

Pictured above is the updated layout for Ghilcrest composing of approximately 26 screens now, a HUGE downsize by approximately 63%, all while still managing to almost keep the same amount of buildings available. Old Ghilcrest had 17 buildings, while the new has 16. Some entrances may not be visible to the camera this time around, but we are circumventing this with opacity shifting when Esmy appears behind them. We may even provide a cursor option (a la Final Fantasy VII) that you could turn on to keep track of her.

We also even made it more isometrical in view, as originally we could have followed the more open layout, but doing it this way keeps it uncomplicated for the player.

We’re going to add the cemetery and pond (where we can even have a fishing mini-game) along the South exit (southeast exit on screen) which will extend that area down a bit, but this is the new layout! Here’s a small animated walkthrough of the layout so you can check out the symmetry:

Wall Sliding and Mob AI

We’re still setting up a lot of stuff, but we can show how smooth our collision mechanics will be. We want tactility to our gameplay since we’ll be playing with a ton of fun abilities that’ll buff Esmy up. So we worked in the same Wall Sliding mechanic similar to Link to the Past. Also here’s a bit of our 1st Mob AI System: the Detection mechanic, where the mob will detect Esmy if she’s within their comfort zone, chase her, and return to it’s position once Esmy gets far away. We can tweak this however we like, such as making enemies cover more ground when chasing her, waiting for a bit when stopping to see if she’s gone for good, or even chase her indefinitely until she kills it (or can’t… hehe).

The other AI System we’re currently putting in now is Elemental Acclimatization, where we give each mob an elemental strength to work in the rock-paper-scissors format when choosing your elemental load-outs. Some mobs may make it clear what their elemental acclimatization is, but others may not. It’ll be up to the player to figure things out.

image

The other AI Types we’re also working in are:

  • Aggro (a variation of what you see above), where mobs will just attack once Esmy steps in their comfort zone.
  • Stealth, where mobs can render themselves invisible to the player.
  • Summoner, where mobs can call in other mobs to help them out when under attack.
  • Pack Behavior, where mobs will gang up on Esmy if she attacks one of them.
  • Support, where mobs will buff and heal other mobs.
  • Steal, where they can steal cryamore or items from Esmy.
  • Stationary, where they don’t move at all and be rooted to the ground.
  • Self Destruct, which is pretty self-explanatory.
  • Transformation, where mobs would change appearance or stats will be buffed when hitting a certain condition.

We’ll cover more of these AI Types the more we go along and as we implement them. We’re working in combat as well now so you should be seeing tests coming within the next week or so regarding it.

Fun Podcast

The folks at Whachow had a podcast interview with some of us (Rob, Alan, Kimlinh, Marianne, and Chris), and we barely had time to prepare so excuse the nervousness and fidgetiness! We share how Cryamore came about, what’s it about, Kickstarting it, the inspiration and influence behind it, voice acting, and more. So enjoy~!

And as always, thanks for the support! You are why this is happening! Keep telling everybody about us!

Here Comes a New Programmer (Or Two) - ‘Console’ Us - Controller/Gamepad Support

cryamore:

We realized we should’ve been keeping you guys up on our updates here on the dev blog just as well as the Kickstarter.

Things have been really busy; for those who don’t know, we hit our goal in under 3 days, voice acting is green lit, both locations are in the bag, and we’re well on our way to getting the additional weapons, honing in on $100k. We’re going to start copying the daily updates here on our devblog too:

A Few Good Men

image

We announce that Ryan Koons, a former Insomniac (of Ratchet and Clank fame) programmer and solo game developer, joined our team here at NostalgiCO for the long haul as a Lead Programmer. He was one of the very few programmers on Insomniac’s recent social RPG Outernauts. You can also check out his fun, smaller-scale title Stardrops.

Brandon Cullis, a professional software engineer by day & game dev by night, is also jumping in the fray. He’s working on this huge C#/XNA Level Editor at the moment, but he’s going to take some time out to be an Assistant Programmer, help managing a lot of the scripting.

They both approached us a while back, and they’re already getting to work! Glad to have them! Guess we’ll be getting this alpha build out sooner than we planned…

Console Support

The next slew of frequently asked questions involved further console support, likeWii-U, PSN, XBLA… You guys really don’t know how much we would love to get Cryamoreon those platforms, but they will require a considerable amount of funding and effort to get accomplished (which may or may not include, moving to a different engine/IDE).

With that said, we’re closely looking at the numbers and studying whether this is possible. We’d rather keep our focus and limitations as far as the game is concerned but we do entertain the thought of getting Cryamore on major consoles. It’s up to the people. So there may be one or two more stretch goals, it all depends. Get the word out there, this could be even bigger.

Controller and Gamepad Support

Looks like we’re good on controller and gamepad implementation, which is what we intended.

Let’s keep moving! Again, thanks for the constant and consistent support as usual, folks! Let’s knock out the rest of these stretch goals!

Yup, Esmy. 3 Days left.
We’re getting really close to ending our campaign to begin our campaign (LOL), and we’re really looking forward to it. We’ve spent the past month and a half pausing game development to prepare a tasty Kickstarter package for everyone. We can’t wait to get back to working on the actual game at the end of the week.
For a taste of what everyone will be getting IF the Kickstarter succeeds:
The full game, of course! (If the Kickstarter doesn’t succeed, well, you’ll only be getting just the game… in like, 3 years…)
Over 20 High Resolution Exclusive Wallpapers
Digital 40+ Song Soundtrack by Aivi
A Kickstarter Backer-Only printed World Map of Noka Island
Signed Physical 2-Disc 40+ Song Soundtrack by Aivi with exclusive art within
Signed Kickstarter-Exclusive Hardcover Artbook w/ exclusive concept and promo art & Guest Art from some of your favorite illustrators and all, printed by UDON
9-inch, Resin-casted Esmy Figure
9-inch, Resin-casted Bliss Figure
Original Colored Marker Illustrations by Rob of Esmy or Bliss wearing whatever you like & cosplaying as any character you like
Plus, opportunities to get your OC or yourself in the game, create monsters, and create a side-quest with us
Again, all these goodies are contingent on whether the Kickstarter is successful or not. And most of these goodies are pretty limited, meaning that not everyone would be able to get them.
So with that said, we can’t wait to get this party started. Again, we TRULY appreciate all the love, positive feedback, and response, as well as sharing Cryamore with your friends. We humbly ask that you guys please, continue to share! It’s been helping a lot so far and it doesn’t end here! You guys are the backbone to helping us get this thing off!
See you Friday!

Kickstarter Prep

cryamore:

Hey kids! Rob here!

Things are building up and getting bigger for Cryamore, and we have been doing some analysis and studying of past and current Kickstarter projects, as well as reading tons and tons of analytical articles. We want to make it understandable that it is NOT our goal to amass a fortune “just to do it”, we have a generous reason and we will have limits (to the best of our ability; we know we won’t be able to control how much we’re getting if it reaches past a certain point). We already have our margins set in place, but we will give an idea to you guys.

Currently, we’re still doing everything out of our own pockets and time. Right now, we’ll list the ‘definites’ that we’ll need a lil’ monetary support for:

  • Soundtrack and Sound Design: Aivi is a boss, you’ve heard what she’s capable of. Surasshu will be doing the SFX design for the game, and he is a boss too. Both will be working together on some tracks as well; all in all, they’re a tour de force. If you want that excellent sound quality to continue (we all do over here), then we will definitely need backing for that.
  • Background Assistance: Right now, I’m drawing and coloring/painting the backgrounds, and it’s taxing considering what I do for my day job. This is probably more personal, since its an area where i can manage it myself 100%, but I will definitely be looking soon for an assistant to help color/paint the BGs I draw up, to speed things along.
  • Travel Costs/Support: As much as we’d like to be turtle hermits and sit all day in front of our computers drawing and coding to death, we will definitely have to market Cryamore IRL and at places other than the Internet, like PAX, Magfest, and GDC.
  • Also, Support for working on the game: Alan and I both have day jobs and other miscellaneous tasks that eat up our time. We’re not looking for anyone to pay our rent while we’re working on the game (this is still purely passion-at-play) but a little that can alleviate and buy us extra time to work on Cryamore a bit more extensively would be pretty awesome.

That pretty much wraps the basics. As you can see, it’s not much. Now next, the ‘hopefuls’:

  • Voice Acting: We are capable of doing it, and we definitely would love to have it, but we’ll definitely need the financial support to make it happen. We already got some experienced (and popular) voice actors/actresses contacting us, just itching to get in on it, so…
  • Extra Asset Production Help: Having a small handful of team members in general, that will speed things along greatly.

Now, to talk about the incentives that we’re going to have available to make this all fun for everyone. I’ll ramble off a list of ideas of what we have so far:

  • Name in Credits
  • Special Exclusive Wallpapers
  • Short Digital Prologue Comic by Moi
  • Full Complete Game
  • Exclusive Posters
  • Full Soundtrack
  • Signed Physical Ver. of Soundtrack by Aivi
  • T-Shirts(?)
  • Limited Edition Artbook signed by Us Two (which will feature concept art and special illos)
  • Original Illustration(s) from Moi
  • Yourself as a Town Citizen
  • Yourself as a Rare Monster/Design Your Own Monster
  • Limited Edition Esmyrelda Statue/Figure

That about covers the ‘definites’ as far as our incentives go. It’s a little taxing (and nerve-wrecking) but we believe we’re covering good ground. Anything you’d like to see as an incentive? Comment in the Disqus below!

I figure I will give a new update on things, and in short, we’re starting to walk in the deep end of the pool. Cryamore has been getting tremendous support so far, and we can’t thank you guys enough for just the passing along and word-of-mouth you guys have been displaying! We really want to make this game extremely special, and all you folks who believe in the Alan and the Rob that believes in you, greatly appreciates it. =)
